Android App Contests and Promotions

Android App ChampionWinning an app contest is a great way to get great exposure for your Android app, and possibly some cash immediately.  Several big-name apps got catapulted into the public eye when they won an app contest.

Having success with Android apps involves more than just making a great app.  Getting discovered by your potential users is critical  to success, and Android app contests are a great way to get more exposure.

Unfortunately, it’s a little harder to find a big challenge to compete in than it was a few years ago.  Now that Android has taken off, Google is done with the Android Developer Challenge (ADC).  The ADC II pages still show up in search results, but it’s way too late to enter!  The third PayPal X Developer Challenge also just ended.

So where do you turn?

Show your Enthusiasm for Android

Android vinyl figure from DYZOK, this one is completely frivolous.  I have no practical need for a plastic Android figure for my desk, but I wanted one.

I spend a lot of my time with Android, for professional and personal reasons.   So why not have a physical reminder of my enthusiasm?

Oh, and Android also represents freedom – not just open-source software and an open and usable platform, but also freedom from my cubicle job.  So it’s meaningful to me.

Naming your Android App

Top in Paid Android AppsHere are a few ideas to consider when a name for your next Android application.  When you have a paid app and a free app, you want the name of the paid app to convey additional value.  It’s all part of a consistent effort to create a positive impression.

Having a successful app involves much more than writing some code and uploading it.  The first things a potential user will see are likely either the name, the icon, or the promo image.  This post focuses on the name.

What name to choose, though?  Not everyone perceives each word the same way.

I looked through the top 200 paid apps on the Android Market this week, and was surprised by some statistics.  Note that this isn’t a comprehensive survey or any kind of scientific test.  It was, however, good enough to convince me to keep the name I had chosen (Pumpkin Carver Pro). Continue reading
